Silencers can be divided into three categories:

Silencers that absorb and dissipate sound waves are lined with these materials, such as mineral wool or fibreglass. With mid- and high-frequency noise, they work best.

Low-frequency noise is the focus of reactive chamber silencers. The noise energy is reflected back to the source using a number of chambers with various interior cross-sections.

A hybrid of the absorptive and reactive designs, called absorptive/reactive. To meet tougher attenuation standards, design spans a wider spectrum of frequencies.
